Iconography Display

Just in time for Lent and Holy Week, The Gift Shop & Art Gallery at St. David’s (St. David’s Episcopal Church in Wayne, PA) is pleased to present Ben Powley, a writer of icons as our artist of the month for March. Powley says, “The purpose of an icon is to serve as a ‘window into heaven.’ Some people find icons a help in praying, while for others icons serve as a reminder of the ‘cloud of witnesses’ which have gone before us.” Ben’s hope is that, with these icons, people may grow closer to God. The Art Gallery space is open daily to view the icons, and the Gift Shop will also host a meet and greet with Powley on Friday, March 22 from 6-8 p.m., to which all are welcome.

Ben was born and raised on a small farm in upstate New York. He attended the New England School of Art in Boston, majoring in commercial art. After graduation he worked as an Art Director in New England and the Philadelphia area. After retirement, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA), graduating with a certificate.

During his time at PAFA, he and his wife, Lynne, became Associates with the Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, NY. Holy Cross is an Episcopal Benedictine Monastery offering a wide variety of retreats. One of these retreats was an icon class led by Peter Pearson. He eventually took two classes with Pearson and since then has been continuing with his own icon writing.
