A Reminder of Love

“Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.”
~ Colossians 3:14-15

Dear People of St. David’s,

This past Monday was my first official day back in the office. I returned from a few weeks of paternity leave to take care of my now ten-month-old son. People have been asking me, “So, how was your time away? What did you do? Did you enjoy it?” The answer I’ve been giving is that it was great to be with Zion and have that one-on-one time with him. It was a real blessing. But as many of you know, being a parent is hard work! I think I’m officially a professional diaper changer (I’m going to add it to the plaque outside my office door).

However, it was hard for me to be away from all of you. I’m not great at taking time off—I love being a priest, and I love ministering with this faith community. On Saturday, when we celebrated the institution of Rick as our new Rector and the installation of Elaine as our Director of Music, I was excited to be a part of it. It was a piece of St. David’s history, and what a good feeling it was to have both of them “officially” in these roles. These are two people who will continue to have a positive impact on St. David’s. We have a bright future ahead of us. The entire service felt like a big hug. The music was amazing, the Rev. Susan Ironside gave a fantastic sermon, and the opportunity to share in communion with one another was the icing on the cake. After the service, we enjoyed some light refreshments in Allen Hall and continued the celebration by being in fellowship with one another.

After being away, Saturday was such a lovely reminder of the love that permeates through everything we do here at St. David’s. In a world that can feel so dark at times, in a world that is full of hate and violence, we need to remember the love we have for one another. It’s a love that transcends time and space—a love that comes from Jesus Christ. So, on this Valentine’s Day, I’m grateful for the love of St. David’s. Keep it going! The world needs it.

See you all in church!

Blessings,
The Rev. Thomas Szczerba
Associate Rector
