Dear People of St. David’s,
Off the bat, I have to tell you that getting my car’s oil changed is not my favorite thing to do. I never understood why regular maintenance is necessary to keep my car healthy! I’ve always thought that just pumping gas should be enough to take care of it. So I thought I was being good this morning and took my car to one of the shops in Wayne. I told them that I had an appointment and checked my car in. They happily received my car and then I asked them where I might be able to sit while I wait. The guy behind the counter told me that because of Covid, they aren’t allowing people to wait and that I’d have to come back. I begrudgingly said “okay” and decided to walk the TWO miles from the shop to church, after all it is a beautiful day outside today.
On my long walk over the hills and through the snow, I got to thinking about how, perhaps, our cars aren’t the only thing in need of regular maintenance. Our lives need an oil change and a wheel alignment too. And that is what Lent is about. Life, much like our cars, take a lot of regular wear and tear. In order for it to continue to operate in its best condition, we’ve got to work on the internal bits from time to time.
Lent is a time of self-examination. Some important questions for us all to reflect on are who am I, what am I doing, how is what I’m doing deepening my spiritual journey and how am I inviting others into a deeper spiritual journey with God.
Perhaps getting my oil change is a good thing, even if it’s not my favorite. Perhaps you will find that self- examination is a good thing too, even if it’s not your favorite. I hope you have a blessed and fruitful Lent!
Oh and just to conclude my story, I had a beautiful walk through the neighborhood today. No longer than 5 minutes after I made my way to church I received a phone call telling me that my car was ready to be picked up, I probably should have just gotten a donut across the street and waited there.
