Dear People of St. David’s,
This is our third clergy letter done as a video message highlighting our St. David’s impact as part of our Stewardship Campaign: “Christ’s Light. Know it. Share it.”
Why would we give to St. David’s? First, we give in thanksgiving to God for the abundant gifts with which we have been blessed both in our lives generally and through St. David’s. Second, we give to ensure St. David’s continues the worship and ministries that we personally care about so that they’ll be there for us and for others. Third, we give because of the impact of all of St. David’s worship and ministries – even those we are not directly connected with. These videos speak into this third part.
This week’s interview is with Carol Kangas and Ned Miller. Below the video you’ll find a transcript. This is the third of four videos that we’ll be sharing each week.

What began with Christmas pageants grew into a deeper call to serve. One sermon was all it took to spur Carol Kangas and Ned Miller into action. Carol Kangas shares about her years supporting ministry with Episcopal churches in Guatemala, and Ned Miller lifts up our hands-on local Outreach programs. Through Outreach, members of all ages put faith into action, getting to know Christ in others and sharing Christ with others.

Carol Kangas: What drew us to St. David’s in the beginning was that I brought my 2-year-old oldest son to see the Christmas pageant, and I, I had never been here. I, I had no idea what we were getting into – and when I saw a donkey and sheep walk down the aisle, I thought, “Well, this is something really, really new.”

We actually came back and I came, went to the old church and heard a wonderful sermon by Lou Mills, and the whole point of the sermon was, it’s time to get serious about the church. And I thought, “He’s talking to me.”
Ned Miller: Well, when I, when I think about outreach, I think about people that have reached out to me and I can, you know, I was thinking about the number of people who’ve asked me to do something and each time it’s been something I’ve considered.
Sometimes I’ve said no. But more often than not, it’s been a gift. I remember a woman who asked me, gee, it was probably 30 years ago now, whether I’d be willing to take some uh, things down to Chester, to the food pantry. And I said, sure. And that was really a gift in the sense that it exposed me, not just to a wider community, but to a lot of people within our own church.
Carol Kangas: It was hearing that St. David’s was going to get involved in sending a group to Guatemala to investigate setting up some, some kind of a partnership with The Episcopal churches in Guatemala. I didn’t even realize there were Episcopal churches in Guatemala. These folks are perfectly capable of working and they work a lot harder than we do, and they’re thanking us for being there, and that’s, it’s just been a great part of my life.
Ned Miller: I’d also add that you don’t have to go all the way to Guatemala to get involved in outreach. There have been outreach activities in the church, there have been ones two miles away. Again, I would second Carol’s comments. It’s been a wonderful way to get to know others. At the same time, we’re of service and the service I think is meaningful.
People, people value what it is we can do to help. So that’s one of the things about the outreach activities. There are many, they’re varied. They can involve family members of all ages, and that’s one of the things that I think is a great strength.
