In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus promises his followers that when they are weighed down by the worries and challenges of the world, he will give them rest. The reality is that it is no easy feat being a Middle School or High School student in today’s day and age! And it’s not always easy parenting these amazing young people! So many students and families are juggling the expectations of sports, school, various extracurriculars, and the weight of the future. These things are, of course, good and necessary! However, in my years working with students and families, I have seen the ways these good things can also feel challenging and tiresome. The Good News is that this is exactly where Jesus’ radical promise of unconditional love meets us. Jesus’ promise reminds us that first and foremost we are always already beloved and worthy children of God.
My hope with youth group at St. David’s, and youth activities more broadly, is that your student can get involved in a community that reminds them of this life-changing promise. Maybe this means coming to youth group weekly, maybe this means your family making their way to the youth and adult forum after church, or maybe this means getting involved in monthly events. Whatever it looks like for your family and student, we are here to remind you that you are beloved by God, and nothing will ever change that. We hope to journey with you in that promise.
