Part-Time ASSOCIATE MUSIC DIRECTOR AND ORGANIST
(20-30 hours per week)
Job Description
St. David’s Episcopal Church, Wayne, PA, a vibrant and historic Episcopal parish with a deep musical tradition, seeks a part-time Associate Director of Music and Organist. We are a 3,000 member congregation with three graded children’s choirs, a 40 voice adult choir, and two handbell choirs. Our program is supported by a Director of Music, Interim Associate Director of the Chorister Program, Interim Associate Director of Handbells, Administrative Assistant, and 8 staff section leaders. St. David’s is home to a 2007 Dobson organ in the 2006 Chapel and a 1951 Aeolian Skinner/Turner organ in the historic 1715 church. The ideal candidate will be a skilled organist/pianist, excellent teacher, collaborative colleague, and dedicated pastoral leader.
Associate Organist Responsibilities
- Share in the playing of the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service with choirs and bell choirs including hymns, service music, and voluntaries.
- Play for the 5 p.m. Sunday service, organ only, with an occasional soloist.
- Serve as principal accompanist of the choirs in collaboration with the Director of Music, and some assistance from volunteer pianists.
- Thursday evening Adult Choir rehearsal: 7:15-8:45 p.m.
- Wednesday evening Chorister rehearsals: 4:45-5:30 p.m., and 6-7 p.m.
- Accompany and play for other special services throughout the year including, but not limited to: Christmas Eve services, an annual Messiah concert, Lessons and Carols, Holy Week services, and Adult Choir/Youth Choir concerts, musicals, and festivals.
- Serve as principal organist for the Adult Choir trips and occasionaly Youth Choir trips. The next Adult Choir trip is a residency at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, Scotland in July of 2027.
- Direct choirs/handbell choirs in the absence of the Director of Music and direct sectional rehearsals on occasion.
- Lead music during Children’s Chapel, and for the Family Service on occasion.
Administrative
- Meet with Director of Music, Associate Director of the Choristers, and Music Administrative Assistant on a regular basis.
- Collaborate with the Director of Music in planning other worship experiences for the 5 p.m. service in the Church. Recently these services have included two Taizé services per year, and a Tenebrae service during Holy Week.
- Assist the Director of Music and Music Administrative Assistant in maintaining the music library.
- Observe the copyright law.
- Assist the Director of Music in the administration and expenditure of the music budget.
- Assist the Director of Music and Music Assistant with proofreading of bulletins.
Instrument Maintenance
- Assist the Director of Music with the maintenance of the parish’s 2007 Opus 84 Dobson organ, 1951 Aeolian Skinner/Turner organ in the Old Church, rebuilt Steinway B, Kawai baby grand, Bechstein baby grand, and Willard Martin French double harpsichord.
Weddings and Funerals
- The Associate Music Director has 2nd right of refusal (after the Director of Music) to all weddings and funerals.
Other responsibilities
- Serve as one of the music directors/accompanists for our annual weeklong music camp in June (if available).
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Music required, Master’s Degree preferred.
- Relevant experience in a church setting.
- Exceptional organ and piano playing skills including service playing, accompanying, and solo repertoire.
- Choral directing experience is a preferred.
- Experience working with handbell choirs is a bonus. The position can be expanded for those with conducting experience and interest in directing a handbell choir.
- Experience working with children and youth is a bonus. The position can be expanded for candidates with significant training and experience working with chorister programs.
- Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, and lay leaders as part of a leadership team.
- Love for the work of music ministry in a large (3,000 member) Episcopal Parish.
Compensation
- Part-time salaried position, commensurate with experience.
- $44,000-49,000: Associate Organist position (20 hours per week).
- $49,000-55,000: Associate Organist and Associate Handbell Director positions (24 hours per week).
- $55-60,000, plus benefits: Associate Organist, Associate Handbell Director, and Associate Director of the Choristers positions (30 hours per week).
- Four paid vacation weeks including four Sundays off.
