The Painting Circle

The Painting Circle is a small group of five painters (Terry Boyle, Mary Colket, Barbara Dooley, Muffie McFadden, Sabine Rehm) which meets weekly at St. David’s. Each of them brings their own unique style and preferred medium, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, and alcohol inks. What they all love and enjoy is nature and the light upon this beautiful landscape called Earth. They critique each other’s work when requested, but usually allow each other’s individual vision and creativity to shine through. They hope you enjoy this show saying, “May our paintings bring you as much joy as we have had in painting them. See the light in flora and fauna, the seascape and the glint in the eyes of God’s beautiful creatures.”

Terry Boyle
Terry was born and raised in the Philadelphia area suburbs. From an early age, she was artistically influenced by her grandfather, Einor Hiortdahl. She received her art education at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Her artistic memberships include Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia Watercolor Society, Delaware Valley Art League, Wayne Art Center, French Creek Art Colony, Painting Circle, Philadelphia Pastel Society, and American Impressionist Society. Terry’s art mediums include oil, watercolor, sketch, and pastel.

Mary Colket
Mary Colket loved to draw at a very young age. Upon graduation from high school, she realized her vocation and became a religious nun, a Sister of St. Columban, an Irish order of medical missionaries. Drawing was not in the curriculum. Vatican II had other ideas and she, along with hundreds of others, left the order. She pursued a nursing career shortly thereafter and did not pursue an art education until age 54. She studied at Wayne Art Center under Karen Fogarty, Carol Kardon, and Joe Sweeney. In addition, she has attended at workshops in Ireland, Italy, Belgium, and locally.

Barbara Dooley
Barbara Dooley attended Villlanova University where she studied liberal arts, including five art history courses. For many years she was employed in law firm and corporate administrative and paralegal functions, while also finding time to study drawing, oil, and watercolor painting, as well as Chinese brush painting at PAFA, Main Line Art Center, Wayne Art Center, and numerous workshops. She served multiple terms on the board of Delaware Valley Art League.

Muffie McFadden
Muffie (Mary Jo) McFadden works in several mediums. A primarily self-taught artist, she enjoys painting with watercolor, acrylics, and alcohol inks. She loves the vibrancy of inks, the subtleties of watercolor, and the expressiveness of acrylic. Muffie and her husband raised five children and have seven grandchildren. Family, pets, and travel have inspired many of her works. After graduating from Georgian Court College, she was employed as a newspaper editor and turned to painting years later. A member of several art and critique groups, she has exhibited nationally and in Ireland. Her portrait of a friend and victim of September 11, 2001, is included in a rotating exhibition in Northern New Jersey. She is also involved in creating and showing artisan crafts.

Sabine Rehm
Sabine Rehm went to veterinary school and specialized in pathology, working as a research scientist for 30 years. Thereafter she made art an important part of her life taking classes at different Main Line art centers and currently at the Graham Painting Studio. She attends workshops, participates in art critique groups, and is a member of the Delaware Valley Art League, the Wayne Art Center, Chester County Art Association, and The Artists Circle of the Main Line. Her paintings have been chosen for numerous juried shows along the Main Line and in Philadelphia. She has received many awards.
